Vertebral artery in relationship to C1-C2 vertebrae: an anatomical study.
BACKGROUND Ten randomly selected adult cadaveric specimens were dissected to analyse the anatomy of the vertebral artery during its course from the C3 transverse process to its entry into the spinal dural canal at the level of C1. In addition, 10 dry cadaveric C1-C2 bones were studied. The course of the artery and the parameters relevant during surgery in the region are evaluated. METHODS Ten...
متن کاملRotational vertebral artery occlusion at C1-C2.
Compromise of blood flow in the vertebral arteries associated with head rotation is generally considered an uncommon cause of vertebrobasilar insufficiency. It can occur at virtually any level of the cervical spine. We present two cases of transient total occlusion of the left vertebral artery at the atlantoaxial joint during head rotation to the right. In one case, the contralateral vertebral ...
متن کاملAtlanto-axial fusion with transarticular screw fixation.
We reviewed 161 patients, from four centres in Switzerland, who had undergone posterior fusion of the upper cervical spine with transarticular screw fixation of the atlanto-axial joints. They were followed up for a mean 24.6 months. The vertebral artery and the medulla escaped injury and only 5.9% of the complications were directly related to the screws. The rate of pseudarthrosis was 0.6%.
متن کاملBipartite Atlas with Os Odontoideum with Block Cervical Vertebrae: A Case Report with Emphasis on the "Overlooked" C1 Lateral Masses.
Though rare, a variety of bipartite atlas has been described. However, little has been mentioned about the hypoplastic C1 lateral masses in these cases. An unusual case of bipartite atlas, with hypoplastic lateral masses, os odontoideum and block vertebrae has been described with the surgical challenges encountered. The emphasis here is to study the C1 lateral masses and attempting C1-2 fusion ...
متن کاملTransoral decompression and posterior fusion for rheumatoid atlanto-axial subluxation.
Cervical myelopathy is an uncommon but potentially fatal complication of rheumatoid atlanto-axial subluxation. Computerised myelotomography with three-dimensional reconstruction shows that rheumatoid pannus, together with the odontoid peg, contributes significantly to anterior cervico-medullary compression. These findings were the basis for treatment by transoral anterior decompression and post...
